Former MLA Jatu Lahiri, who started his political career with Congress and later left the grand old party after the formation of Trinamool, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 87 at his home in Ambika Kundu Bai Lane, Shibpur in West Bengal. Lahiri was born on 28 April 1936 and had served as an MLA from the Shibpur assembly constituency five times, winning elections in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2016, and 2021.
Lahiri began his political journey in 1991 when he contested and won the assembly elections from the Shibpur constituency on a Congress ticket. He went on to win again in 1996. Later, he won the 2001 assembly elections from the same constituency on Trinamool's ticket.
After suffering defeat in the 2011 elections, Lahiri returned as an MLA in 2016. He then left Trinamool and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2021, winning the assembly elections from Shibpur once again.
Following Lahiri's demise, the political world has expressed its condolences. Arup Roy, a state minister, expressed his grief over the loss of his former colleague, stating that they had fought many battles together and that Lahiri was a longtime worker for their cause.
