TMC party office in Hooghly allegedly sold; Former MLA accused

Allegations have surfaced regarding the potential sale of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) party office in Arambagh, Hooghly, which has been an operational base for the party since 1998. The office is situated in the Rangamati area of the Tethulmuri mouza and was established on land previously designated as government forest. This office has historically served as a crucial hub for party activities, especially following the political shift in West Bengal after the 2011 state elections, which saw the TMC rise to prominence.

Concerns have been voiced by local TMC members regarding the ramifications of losing such a significant asset. Local leader Utpal Dey articulated the sentiment shared by many party workers, emphasizing that the office not only facilitates day-to-day operations but also serves as a symbol of the party’s presence and commitment to the community. He stated that the potential sale would disrupt their engagement with local constituents and hinder their ability to organize events, mobilize supporters, and address community issues effectively. Dey’s comments reflect a broader anxiety among party members about the future of their organizational capabilities in the region.

The controversy centers on former MLA Manas Majumdar, who is allegedly linked to the discussions surrounding the office's sale. Reports indicate that his associates may be involved in negotiating the deal. In response to the accusations, Majumdar has firmly denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the office is not for sale and dismissing the allegations as part of a smear campaign aimed at undermining his reputation. Despite his assertions, the lack of clarity regarding the office's fate has left many local party members feeling unsettled and uncertain about their future operations.

In light of these developments, the opposition, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has positioned itself to critique the TMC, framing the allegations as evidence of internal strife and factionalism within the ruling party. BJP Mandal president Dolon Das has pointed out that the situation highlights significant rifts among TMC leadership, suggesting that such divisions could weaken the party’s standing ahead of upcoming elections. He stressed that the integrity of the party office is paramount, likening its importance to that of a temple for political activities. Rumors have circulated that if the sale proceeds, the space could be transformed into a shoe store, which has further inflamed tensions among party members.

Additionally, TMC MP Mithali Bag has responded to the situation by calling for accountability and urging the Forest Department to intervene if the allegations are substantiated. She stated that reclaiming the land would send a strong message regarding the party's commitment to its principles and its local base. This incident has sparked discussions within the TMC about the need for better management of party assets and the importance of transparency in decision-making processes. As the controversy unfolds, the TMC faces increasing pressure to address the allegations, reassure its members, and solidify its organizational structure to maintain its influence in the region.
