Speculation is intensifying over the potential return of Suhrita Pal as Vice-Chancellor of the Health University, following a Supreme Court directive that led to the formation of a search committee for the appointment. This committee was tasked with interviewing candidates to ensure a transparent selection process. Last Sunday, retired Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit conducted interviews with eight applicants vying for the position, highlighting the significance of the process mandated by the court.
According to sources within the Health Department, Suhrita Pal's name has emerged in the shortlist submitted to Nabanna. Her previous tenure as Vice-Chancellor ended amid controversy, primarily related to allegations of irregularities in the university's operations and the appointment procedures that violated UGC regulations. The committee also included two other candidates: Pritbaran Chakraborty, currently the Principal of NRS, and Keshav Mukhopadhyay, former Principal of Kalyani JNM.
The key issue now lies in whether Chancellor CV Ananda Bose will approve Pal’s reinstatement, given the serious nature of the allegations against her. The Health University had previously faced scrutiny over its hiring practices, leading to her removal. Pal has contested this decision, challenging her dismissal in the Kolkata High Court, which adds another layer of complexity to her potential return.
The Supreme Court's involvement in the appointment process underscores the emphasis on governance and accountability within higher education institutions. The formation of the search committee is a step towards ensuring that the selection of a new Vice-Chancellor aligns with legal and regulatory standards. This has drawn attention from various stakeholders, including faculty members and students, who are keen on a transparent process.
