The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted a detailed chargesheet in the Kolkata RG Kar rape-murder case to the Sealdah Court, outlining the sequence of events that led to the tragic murder of a junior doctor at the hospital. The chargesheet names only one accused, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, and spans 45 pages, citing circumstantial evidence and CCTV footage to establish his involvement in the gruesome crime.
Reconstructing the timeline, the CBI revealed that Roy and another individual visited a patient—a relative of the latter—admitted to RG Kar Hospital around 2:30 PM on August 8. The pair then proceeded to the Allahabad Bank branch at Shobha Bazar around 2:45 PM, where they attempted to deposit cash into the account of ASI Anup Dutta but were unable to do so due to the closure of transaction hours. Dutta is currently in police custody and is being interrogated regarding his connection with Roy.
Around 10:45 PM, Roy and his companion left the police barracks to purchase alcohol and food, eventually visiting a brothel in the Chetla area. While both entered the brothel, Roy did not engage in sexual activities; instead, he consumed alcohol while his companion interacted with a sex worker. The pair returned to RG Kar Hospital around 3:20 AM, with Roy initially heading to the fifth floor of the emergency building before returning to the fourth floor.
The pivotal moments of the crime occurred between 4:03 AM and 4:31 AM on August 9. The chargesheet indicates that Roy entered the chest medicine seminar room at 4:30 AM, where the victim was sleeping alone at that time. CCTV footage captured him entering the hospital at 3:34 AM, dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, holding a helmet in his left hand and wearing headphones around his neck. He left the seminar room at 4:31 AM, notably without the headphones, which were later recovered by the Kolkata Police from the crime scene.
The CBI has compiled 11 pieces of evidence linking Roy to the crime, including semen and saliva samples collected from the victim's clothes and body, along with hair samples. Blood stains from the deceased were also discovered on Roy's trousers and shoes, indicating a violent struggle. Additionally, signs of forced intercourse and injuries consistent with the victim's resistance were found. A Bluetooth ear set belonging to the accused was recovered from the scene, and the alignment of mobile tower locations with the CCTV footage further corroborated the timeline of events.
