Mamata announces award for flagging 'fake news', lauds police and blames serials for crimes

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lauded the Kolkata Police and Bengal Police for their tireless efforts in maintaining law and order, particularly during the Puja season. During her recent address, she stressed the importance of the police forces and announced several new incentives for civilians who assist in catching criminals. These rewards, especially targeting women, are meant to encourage greater public participation in tackling cybercrime and other offenses.

Speaking at a public event, Banerjee emphasized that while the police sometimes face criticism, their efforts are no less than those of central forces or even the army. "We should remember the dedication of the police during emergency duties, day or night, even when they stand in the rain," she remarked. She added that despite the occasional misstep, their contributions should be recognized and celebrated, especially during major festivals like Durga Puja.

Mamata Banerjee outlined a new program where citizens, particularly women, who help police identify and catch cybercriminals, would be rewarded. "Those who can write down fake reports and assist the police in cybercrime cases will be given recognition, even jobs if needed," she announced. Banerjee believes women have a unique ability to assist in crime detection due to their involvement at the grassroots level.

In the speech, she also addressed the ongoing cybercrime issue, pointing out the negative influence of media and online platforms on young minds. She stated that harmful content on platforms like YouTube and crime-based TV serials is encouraging criminal behavior in society. "People see crimes on TV and copy them in real life. We must stop this cycle," she said, urging women to take action by working with the police to monitor cybercrimes.

Mamata expressed her concern over the tragic Kultali case and demanded swift justice. She called on the POCSO court to ensure that the guilty are brought to justice within three months. In addition, she used the occasion to celebrate the resilience and hard work of Bengal's law enforcement, reiterating that the state's forces are highly capable and comparable to any national security service.

The Chief Minister concluded her speech with a symbolic prayer to Tagore, marking the beginning of the Puja season, and went on to inaugurate 400 pandals across the city. She urged the people of Bengal to trust the police and continue moving forward as a community that values security and justice.
