Amid widespread protests and violent scuffles over the brutal rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken a strong stance. On Friday, she led a protest rally, calling for the death penalty for the accused involved in the heinous crime.
In her address, CM Banerjee issued an ultimatum to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), demanding that the probe be expedited and completed by Sunday, August 18. She insisted that the culprits must face capital punishment. "Within Sunday (August 18), CBI has to facilitate the hanging of the guilty and complete the entire probe," she stated.
The rally led by Mamata Banerjee is part of a broader demand for justice following the shocking incident that has sparked outrage across the state. The crime, which occurred last week at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has led to widespread condemnation and calls for swift justice. A civic volunteer has already been arrested in connection with the crime.
The incident escalated further when a group of around 40 people stormed the hospital in the early hours of Thursday, vandalizing the emergency department, nursing unit, and medicine store. The violence has intensified the ongoing protests, with the public demanding justice and safety for medical professionals in the state.
