The vandalism at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital continues to stir tensions, with three more arrests made on Thursday evening, bringing the total number of arrests to 12. Those arrested were swiftly produced in court and have been remanded to police custody until August 22.
The unrest follows the violent attack on the hospital’s emergency ward, which took place in the early hours of Thursday. The attack, which saw a group of nearly 40–50 people storm the premises and destroy property, left the hospital resembling a war zone, with medical equipment and furniture ransacked. Despite the chaos, Kolkata Police have assured that the crime scene of the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor remains intact.
In response to the vandalism, protests erupted both inside and outside the hospital. Doctors, visibly angry and demanding answers, surrounded the administrative building, preventing the principal and superintendent from leaving until they explained the lack of security. Earlier in the day, nurses also staged protests, highlighting the growing unrest among medical staff.
Kolkata Police, taken by surprise during the incident, had to resort to tear gas and lathi charge to disperse the mob. The arrested individuals are now under investigation, with authorities working to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
