The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the tragic sexual assault and murder of a second-year postgraduate student at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. In response to the alarming reports, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, in West Bengal, demanding a detailed report on the investigation and actions taken.
The NHRC has given the authorities a two-week deadline to submit a comprehensive report that covers the current status of the police investigation, actions taken against those responsible, and any compensation provided to the victim's family. The Commission has also requested information on the measures being implemented to prevent such horrific incidents from recurring in the future.
The NHRC expressed grave concern over the incident, stating that the media reports, if accurate, indicate a serious violation of human rights. The Commission emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and swift action to ensure justice for the victim and her family.
