The quasi-independent Oversight Board has recommended that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, overturn two decisions made earlier this fall to remove posts related to the Israel-Hamas war.
The board emphasized the importance of informing the world about human suffering on both sides of the conflict. In response to Meta's removal of content depicting Palestinian casualties and an Israeli hostage, the board asserted that such posts contribute to awareness but criticized Meta's use of automated tools, stating that it may lead to the removal of valuable content highlighting human rights violations.
While Meta reinstated the posts with warning screens, the board disagreed with the company's decision to prevent the recommended sharing of these posts on Facebook and Instagram.
