In the wake of several Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs abstaining from a proposal in the Bengal Assembly to declare 'West Bengal Day,' top leadership within the party is set to seek explanations from these members. Sources within the Trinamool Parishad indicate that this week, Assembly Minister Shobhandev Chattopadhyay will gather information about the matter from the absent MLAs.
During the current monsoon session, the TMC has established a disciplinary committee, chaired by Shobhandev, to ensure discipline among the MLAs. The committee's members include Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Birbaha Hansda.
The committee will conduct a review following the MLAs' responses. Notably, on September 7, a proposal was presented in the Assembly to declare 'West Bengal Day' and 'State Music' in the state.
Despite prior communication to MLAs about their presence being required for the discussion, some members were absent. The absence of several MLAs during the vote on the proposal, which ultimately passed by a vote of 167-62, raised questions within the Trinamool Parishad Party. With the party boasting 215 MLAs, the disparity between the number of votes cast and their membership has prompted the leadership to seek explanations from the absentees.
The Trinamool leadership is keen to understand the reasons for the absence of its members during this significant proposal vote, especially since it was conducted as a show of unity within the party.
