West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the central government of not providing adequate support for river erosion in the state.
Speaking in Murshidabad, Banerjee stated that the government's priorities were focused on politics, riots, provocation and spreading hatred rather than environmental concerns. She criticized the government for not providing Rs 700 crore for the Farakka Barrage project, despite repeated requests. Banerjee also accused the government of making false promises before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and failing to follow through.
The Chief Minister expressed concern about the increasing frequency of natural disasters and rising water levels in rivers, including the Ganga. She emphasized the need to take immediate action to prevent erosion and announced plans to use new technology and plant vetiver grass and mangrove trees along the river and sea banks. Banerjee also declared her intention to make Digha a model for preventing erosion in the Maldah-Murshidabad district by using innovative techniques.
Banerjee urged the government to provide financial support and ensure that no new house is built within a five-kilometer radius from the banks of the Ganga to prevent further erosion. She accused the government of using agencies like the CBI and ED to intimidate and defame opponents.
Banerjee visited Samsherganj in the morning to assess the situation and held an administrative meeting where she distributed leases to 86 people. The Chief Minister reiterated her demand for the government to provide assistance for the Farakka Barrage project and criticized the lack of progress on the issue.
