On Tuesday, Firhad Hakim, the Mayor of Kolkata and a cabinet minister in Mamata Banerjee's government, congratulated students on the commencement of their higher secondary examinations. He visited a school in Ward No. 82, located in his residential area of Chetla, and welcomed the examinees by presenting them with roses. The media was also present during his visit.
During this, Firhad was asked whether teachers for 10th, 11th, and 12th grades had been appointed illegally across the state, with people allegedly paying money to secure these positions. He expressed concern about the future of students if such corruption has indeed taken place.
Firhad clarified that no allegations have been proven so far, and until that happens, any media trial or speculation should be avoided. However, he added that the scam in the appointment of teachers is shameful.
When asked about his former cabinet colleague Partha Chatterjee, Firhad stated that he had worked with him for a long time and never expected him to be involved in corrupt activities. He also remarked that the matter is currently under investigation, and the truth will be revealed in due course.
