Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
Saurabh Mandal, a 22-year-old resident of South Garia, died after being allegedly beaten by staff at a drug de-addiction centre where he had been undergoing treatment for more than a year and a half. The incident occurred on Friday evening, when it is claimed that Saurabh was physically assaulted by staff members, leading to severe injuries. On Saturday morning, after his condition worsened, he was transferred to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where he was declared dead by medical staff.
Following the news of his death, Saurabh’s family, accompanied by local residents, arrived at the drug de-addiction centre. They vandalized the facility in protest, damaging property. The Baruipur police were notified and arrived at the scene to handle the situation. A large police presence was deployed in the area, as tensions remained high and there was a concern about potential unrest or rioting.
The drug de-addiction centre, which has been operating for over ten years, has previously been the subject of allegations regarding the mistreatment of patients. These complaints have raised concerns about the treatment protocols and safety of those undergoing rehabilitation. Police are investigating the cause of Saurabh’s death and the allegations of abuse. Authorities are also reviewing the centre’s operations, and an inquiry has been launched into whether the facility adhered to the necessary legal and ethical standards for patient care.
