Premium: Could there be external pressure on the CBI to stall the RG Kar case?

The court in Kolkata expressed its frustration over the absence of the CBI's investigating officer and a 40-minute delay in the arrival of the agency’s lawyer in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor, even questioning whether it should consider granting bail to the main accused.

The Mysterious Delay of the CBI Lawyer

In a case of such public imporatnce as this, the absence of the CBI’s lawyer during crucial hearing raises serious concerns. Why did a body like the CBI, with vast resources and national importance, fail to ensure its legal representative was present in court? Could this be a mere procedural oversight, or is there a possibility of interference from powerful forces?

When a crime is so brutal and public sentiment so strong, the slightest hint of foul play invites conspiracy theories. Could there be external pressure on the CBI to stall the case? Are there influential figures, political or otherwise, who could benefit from the delays in this investigation?

Unanswered Questions

The court’s frustration was evident when it questioned whether it should grant bail to the accused due to the CBI’s absence. Such an unprecedented situation makes one wonder: Is the system being manipulated from behind the scenes? The delay doesn’t just appear to be incompetence; it could be an orchestrated move to weaken the case, demoralize the prosecution, and create legal loopholes for the accused to escape justice.

The developments in court also prompted an attack on the CBI and the BJP from the Trinamool Congress, which has been under fire over its handling of the horrific crime, with the party alleging that attempts are being made to "sabotage justice". The investigation had been transferred to the agency from the Kolkata Police on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.

What TMC said

Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya expressed her frustration, saying, "The court waited, but no one showed up. We want answers. Why is the opposition silent on this matter? It has been over 24 days and more than 570 hours since the CBI took over the investigation — what progress has been made? The entire nation is demanding answers. This clearly indicates that the CBI is not treating the case with the seriousness it deserves."
