Nitish Reddy shines on Test debut, silences Sunil Gavaskar’s doubts

Sunil Gavaskar, who initially questioned Nitish Kumar Reddy's inclusion in the Indian XI for the Perth Test against Australia, has now praised the 21-year-old all-rounder for his impactful debut. On Day 1, Gavaskar raised doubts during commentary, asking if the youngster was "ready for Test cricket." However, Reddy silenced critics with his impressive performance, contributing with both bat and ball.

In the first innings, Nitish Reddy top-scored for India with a crucial 41-run knock, helping the team reach a modest total of 150 runs. His batting effort gained even more significance as India's bowlers skittled Australia out for just 104, securing a 46-run first-innings lead. Later, in the second innings, Reddy added an unbeaten 38-run cameo, showcasing his versatility and composure under pressure.

Reddy’s maiden Test wicket was another highlight, as he dismissed Australia's Mitchell Marsh in the second innings. While Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling charge, Reddy’s contribution as a bowler and fielder was equally praiseworthy.

Sunil Gavaskar, in his column for Sportstar, acknowledged the youngster's talent. "Nitish Reddy displayed an awareness of what was required that belied his inexperience. His innings in both innings were refreshing, and his all-round skills make him a player to watch out for," Gavaskar wrote.

Before the Test, Gavaskar criticized India’s team management for omitting seasoned spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and expressed skepticism over Reddy’s selection. However, his stellar performance and composure under pressure earned him Gavaskar’s admiration.

India's dominant 295-run victory in Perth has set the tone for the series, with the team now heading to Adelaide for the second Test, starting on December 6. With Reddy proving his mettle, fans are eager to see if he can replicate his debut heroics in the upcoming matches.
