On Tuesday, a joint session of both Houses of Parliament was held in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla formally welcomed President Droupadi Murmu, who delivered the main address. Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other dignitaries, including the leaders of both Houses and key ministers, attended the event. This session was part of a year-long celebration to mark the adoption of India’s Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949.
President Murmu described the Indian Constitution as a “living and progressive document.” She noted that the Constitution has been instrumental in ensuring social justice and inclusive development, reflecting the principles on which the nation was founded. She emphasized that the Constitution continues to guide India’s democratic framework, ensuring its evolution with changing times. “Through our Constitution, we have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development,” she said. Her address underscored the ongoing relevance of the document in shaping the nation’s future.
The event also saw Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, addressing the controversy raised by opposition leaders. The opposition had requested that leaders from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha be given the opportunity to speak during the Constitution Day celebrations. Rijiju clarified that only the President, Vice-President, and Speaker would address the session. He added that seating arrangements had been made for the leaders of the Opposition in both Houses on the dais. Rijiju responded to the opposition’s criticism, calling the reactions “condemnable” and emphasizing that the event followed a traditional format.
Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan also participated in the Constitution Day celebrations. Chief Justice Khanna highlighted the role of the Constitution in India’s transition from a newly independent nation to a vibrant democracy and a global leader. He stated that the Constitution has been essential in ensuring India’s progress and transformation. Justice Manmohan echoed this sentiment, stressing that the Constitution must continue to evolve to address the country’s challenges.
During the event, President Murmu also released two books on the Constitution of India, reflecting on its history and its role in shaping the nation. In addition, the government launched a new website to allow citizens to engage with the Constitution's legacy and participate in discussions about its future. The website aims to promote greater public understanding and involvement with the foundational document of the Indian republic.
