The Commonwealth of Dominica has announced it will honor Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with its highest national award, the Dominica Award of Honour, in recognition of his support to the Caribbean island nation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dominican President Sylvanie Burton is scheduled to confer the award on PM Modi during the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown, Guyana, from November 19 to 21.
A statement from Dominica’s Prime Minister’s Office expressed appreciation for Modi’s contributions, specifically his swift response in supplying 70,000 doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine to Dominica in February 2021. The statement praised PM Modi’s role in strengthening bilateral relations and acknowledged India's ongoing support for Dominica in sectors like healthcare, education, and information technology.
Additionally, the award recognizes Modi’s efforts in championing climate resilience and sustainable development, addressing global challenges, and working towards a shared vision of progress within the Caribbean.
Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit commented on the award, calling it a symbol of Dominica's gratitude for India's solidarity during a time of need and a reflection of the strong bond between the two nations. He praised Modi’s partnership, stating, “Prime Minister Modi has been a true partner to Dominica, particularly during our time of need amid a global health crisis. It is an honour to present him with Dominica’s highest national accolade as a symbol of our gratitude.”
While accepting the honor, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to working alongside Dominica and the wider Caribbean region, underscoring the importance of collaboration in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change.
