Swadesh Chakraborty, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), passed away on Monday at the age of 88 at his residence in Howrah following a prolonged illness. He was a key political figure in West Bengal, having been elected as a Member of Parliament twice. Chakraborty also served as the Mayor of Howrah Municipal Corporation for two terms and held the position of Chairman of the Hooghly River Bridge Commission (HRBC). He was an active member of the CPM's state committee and the Howrah district committee.
Throughout his career, Chakraborty was involved in various significant political and developmental activities in Howrah. As Mayor, he played an integral role in managing the city’s infrastructure and urban services. He was particularly known for his work in urban planning and development, overseeing several important initiatives aimed at improving Howrah’s public facilities. In addition to his local contributions, Chakraborty continued to be involved in political discussions and development-related consultations even after the CPM lost power in the state.
Following his passing, tributes poured in from CPM workers and political leaders. On Tuesday, his body was moved from his residence in Salkia, Howrah, to the CPM district party office in Kadamtala, where party members paid their final respects. The body was then taken to the zonal party office in North Howrah and later to the Salkia Bandhaghat crematorium for cremation.
