The Congress party has won the Sagardighi seat, which was previously dominated by Trinamool for many years. The Congress candidate, Bayron Biswas, supported by the Left Front, won by a margin of over 20,000 votes against Trinamool's Debasish Banerjee and BJP's Dilip Shah. However, the official result is yet to be announced.
Celebrations have erupted among Congress workers and leaders, who are playing Holi to mark their victory. Bengal Pradesh Congress President, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, congratulated the people for their support and victory, while also criticizing Trinamool and Mamata Banerjee.
Chowdhury stated that Mamata Banerjee is not invincible, and Sagardighi is just a part of the larger picture. He also expressed gratitude to the Left party for their support. Despite the BJP's loss, their workers were also seen celebrating outside their party office due to Trinamool's defeat.
The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of state minister Subrata Saha in December last year. The TMC has been winning the seat since 2011, and it secured a margin of more than 50,000 votes in the 2021 assembly elections.
