Princess Diana's letters to two close friends, written during her divorce from now King Charles, have been auctioned for £1,41,150 (Rs 1 million), The Independent reported.
The "confidential collection of 32 highly personal letters and postcards" was addressed to Princess Diana's close friends Susie and Tarek. "Some of the letters touch on the enormous stress she was under during a period of very public grief, yet she exudes strength of character and her generous and humorous nature," the auction house said in a statement.
Susie and Tarek Kassem, close friends of the Princess of Wales, kept these letters for more than 25 years. They did not want to entrust these important documents to their children or grandchildren, so they decided to sell the letters and donate the proceeds to several causes dear to Princess Diana and Susie.
In one of the letters dated February 17, 1996, the princess wrote: “If I had known a year ago what I would experience in this divorce, I would never have agreed to it. It's desperate and ugly." She wrote that she is being watched closely and the only way to communicate with her friends is by writing letters. “It's hard to discuss personal matters because my lines are constantly recorded and relayed.
In another letter dated April 28, 1996, Princess Diana apologized for canceling the opera session with the Kassems and expressed her grief over the divorce: "Sometimes it's too hard to keep my head up and today I'm on my knees and all I want is this. divorce because the potential costs are enormous.' She also informed Susie in a letter dated 17 December 1996 that she would be leaving on 24 December as she was not a "Christmas lover". "If I stay here, I'll go upstairs." I hope 1997 will be an easier year for us all."
However, Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997 in a tragic car accident in Paris.
