On Saturday morning, Malda witnessed two separate road accidents resulting in the loss of three lives. In the first incident, a collision between a passenger minibus and a bike in the Dangapara area of Bamangola claimed the lives of two individuals. The deceased have been identified as Surjit Khan (24) and Pankaj Rai (19), both residents of the Khordanga area of Bamangola. Police retrieved their bodies and sent them for postmortem to Malda Medical College and Hospital. The bus has been seized, and an investigation has been initiated.
In the second accident, a head-on collision between three trucks on National Highway No-512 adjacent to Panchmukhi Kali Temple in Gajol resulted in the death of one person and severe injuries to two others. The deceased has been identified as Tapan Paharia (37), a resident of the Mangalbari area of Old Malda police station.
According to reports, two empty trucks were moving from Balurghat towards Gajol, while a truck carrying corn was coming from Gulab Bagh in Purnia, Bihar. Two trucks approaching from the opposite direction of the corn-laden truck were overtaking each other when the truck carrying corn experienced a burst in its front right wheel, causing it to overturn in the middle of the road.
The two trucks coming from the opposite direction collided head-on, causing damage to the front part of the truck loaded with corn. The driver of the corn-laden truck died on the spot, and the driver and helper of the other two trucks were injured. Locals rescued the two seriously injured individuals and took them to Gajol Rural Hospital.
Upon receiving the news, a heavy police force from Gajol police station reached the scene, along with two cranes and an earth mover from the National Highway Authority, for rescue operations. The deceased driver was trapped in the truck's cabin for an extended period, and it took about one and a half hours to recover the body.
The accident caused a standstill in National Highway traffic for about two hours. The police later took action and removed the accident vehicles from the road, normalizing the traffic.
