SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
A clash broke out between two groups of people on Wednesday over the installation of a 'Toran Gate' (entrance gate) in a market in Jharkhand's Palamu district, triggering tension in the area. According to the police, the clashes took place in Panki village of the district. Initial reports said the violence erupted after a group allegedly vandalized the 'Toran Gate' built for the Maha Shivratri festival, which falls on Saturday. At least twelve people were injured in the incident. Several two-wheelers and cars parked on roadsides were damaged due to stone pelting from two sides. Several houses were also set on fire by the violent mob, sources said. The area near Palamu's Masjid Chowk is said to be the epicenter of the violence.
Section 144 has been introduced in Panki and more than 100 personnel have been deployed to maintain peace. "A clash broke out between two groups in Palamu's Panki. Section 144 has been imposed. The situation is under control with the presence of teams from three police stations. Action must be taken against the accused," Palamu SP CK Sinha told
Police officers from Tarhasi, Pipratand and Lesliganj police stations have been deployed in the area. Police also reportedly arrested several miscreants involved in the incident. Top police officials have already arrived at the site to assess the situation. Some students of the school were reportedly stuck in their classrooms due to the violence.
