It is a neck-and-neck battle between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) candidates as counting of votes for five Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats — three graduates and two teachers' constituencies — took place on Friday.
The counting, which began on Thursday in Bareilly, Jhansi, Gorakhpur and Kanpur districts, is expected to be completed today. Counting of votes for Moradabad graduate constituency is also underway in Bareilly.
There were 63 candidates from the two rivals - BJP and Samajwadi Party - and Independents in the fray for the five seats. Congress and BSP did not contest in the polls.
Forty-four candidates are in the running for three graduate constituencies in various districts and 19 for two teacher constituencies.
The election was held on January 30. A favorable election result will secure the post of leader of the opposition Samajwadi Party in the Legislative Council. The party currently has nine seats in the 100-member assembly. Each party must have at least 10 seats to win the post of Leader of the Opposition.
