Mamata calls urgent meeting at Nabanna tomorrow, key administrative officials to attend
Naharlagun Police in Arunachal Pradesh conducted a successful anti-drug operation in 2024, seizing over 500 grams of heroin, 7 kilograms of cannabis, and other narcotic substances, resulting in the arrest of 91 individuals. The operation, named Operation Dawn, led to the registration of 41 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The total narcotic seizure included 588.42 grams of heroin, 7,042.5 grams of cannabis, 48 grams of Lorazepam, and 233.81 grams of Morphine, confiscated from various drug peddlers operating in the region.
As part of the operation’s objectives, a substantial quantity of illegal substances was confiscated, indicating a significant enforcement effort compared to the previous year. The operation’s results demonstrated a concerted effort by the Naharlagun Police to curb the supply of narcotics in the region. The quantity of drugs seized is a clear indication of the scale of trafficking networks operating in the area, with heroin and cannabis being the most common substances in this crackdown.
Operation Dawn also incorporated a wide range of community-based initiatives to combat drug abuse. The police carried out extensive awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and rehabilitation centers. These campaigns were designed to educate the youth on the dangers of drug abuse, the legal consequences, and the resources available for rehabilitation. The police reported that these campaigns contributed to an increased number of individuals seeking help through rehabilitation programs, which include de-addiction services at local centers.
The operation’s impact was not limited to drug enforcement but also led to a reduction in crime rates associated with drug abuse. Specifically, the number of thefts and burglaries, often linked to individuals suffering from addiction, saw a notable decline. In 2023, 152 cases of theft and burglary were recorded across various police stations in the district. This decrease was attributed to the focused efforts of Operation Dawn in controlling drug-related crimes.
Looking ahead, the Naharlagun Police are preparing for Operation Dawn 2.0, scheduled for 2025. This follow-up operation is set to build upon the successes of the initial phase, with the goal of expanding efforts to curb drug trafficking networks, reducing drug-related crime further, and providing continuous support to individuals battling addiction through awareness and rehabilitation programs. The operation's extended focus will continue to target peddlers, distributors, and traffickers, while also prioritizing community engagement and preventative measures.
