Teen murders friend over stolen videos and blackmail of girlfriend in Meerut, UP

A 17-year-old boy in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, has been detained for the murder of his close friend, Abhinav, after the victim allegedly stole videos of his girlfriend and began blackmailing her. The accused has confessed to killing Abhinav after learning about the blackmail.

Abhinav and the accused were both students preparing for engineering entrance exams. They were neighbors and attended the same coaching classes. On Saturday, the two left for their coaching classes in the morning, but Abhinav did not return home later in the day. His family filed a missing persons complaint that evening, and suspicion quickly fell on the accused.

Police investigation led to the discovery of CCTV footage showing the two together that day. After questioning the accused, he admitted to the murder. He explained that Abhinav had stolen private videos of his girlfriend from his phone and transferred them to his own device. Abhinav then allegedly started blackmailing the girl, demanding that she meet with him. The accused became angry and planned the murder.

On the day of the incident, the accused invited Abhinav to a phone shop to sell his phone. They sold the phone for ₹8,000, then ate at a restaurant. On their way back, the two stopped near a tube well. The accused then took out a hammer from his bag and struck Abhinav in the head, hitting him repeatedly after he collapsed. The accused left the scene after the killing.

Police later recovered Abhinav’s body near the tubewell, along with his belongings, including his two-wheeler, an ATM card, and ₹4,400 in cash. The hammer used in the murder was also found at the scene. The accused has been detained for further questioning. Authorities are reviewing additional evidence, including CCTV footage, to determine if any other individuals were involved in the crime. The investigation is ongoing.
