CM Mamata receives grand welcome in Sandeshkhali on first visit post-violence

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has arrived in Sandeshkhali for the first time after the recent unrest that led to significant tensions in the region. The Chief Minister's visit was marked by a large public gathering at the Arvind Mission Ground, where she distributed the first installment of the "Banglar Bari" housing project to 100 residents of Sandeshkhali. The project, initiated by the West Bengal government, aims to provide affordable housing to marginalized communities in rural areas.

At the event, DGP Rajeev Kumar addressed the crowd and emphasized the link between development and peace. He stated, “Development brings peace, and Sandeshkhali has demonstrated this,” referring to the region’s cooperative efforts with the police and local authorities in maintaining order following the recent violence. Kumar acknowledged the role of both the community and law enforcement in keeping the situation under control. His comments underscored the government’s focus on promoting development as a means of ensuring long-term peace and security.

Sandeshkhali, however, remains a focal point of controversy due to growing concerns about illegal immigration. In the lead-up to the Chief Minister’s visit, local Hindus raised allegations of increasing settlement of Bangladeshi Muslims, particularly in Khulna Pahar, situated on the eastern side of Sandeshkhali island. Locals claim that the settlement has grown rapidly in recent years, with many newcomers believed to be linked to militant activities. The proximity of Khulna Pahar to the Bangladesh border has intensified suspicions, prompting calls from residents for verification of the citizenship status of the settlers.

In addition to these allegations, a longstanding land dispute in Bhermajura has resurfaced. The dispute involves indigenous sharecroppers who claim their land has been encroached upon by local TMC leader Ajit Maity and his supporters. Earlier this year, indigenous farmers like Govinda Sardar, Subhash Sardar, and Sagar Sardar were able to reclaim land that had been illegally seized. They had previously filed complaints with the Scheduled Caste Commission, which ruled in their favor, confirming that the land had been wrongfully occupied through fraudulent documentation. However, despite the commission's decision, enforcement of the order has been delayed due to the influence of local political groups.

Just before the Chief Minister's visit, further allegations surfaced regarding the looting of fish from ponds created on the disputed land. Indigenous sharecroppers reported that men and women were physically assaulted by Ajit Maity's group during the incident. Maity has denied these allegations, asserting that he holds valid documents proving ownership of the disputed land. The local administration faces mounting pressure to resolve the ongoing land issues and address the allegations of illegal settlement and land encroachment. With the Chief Minister's visit bringing these issues to the forefront, there is an expectation that the government will take action to restore order and resolve these disputes.
