Suicide attempt at Chandni Chowk metro station disrupts service
Kolkata Metro has announced the operation of special trains on December 31st, 2024, to accommodate the anticipated increase in passenger traffic due to the New Year celebrations. The special services will run throughout the night to ensure smooth travel for the people heading out to celebrate, with trains operating on the North-South corridor, one of the busiest routes of the metro network.
From 9:48 PM on December 31st, special trains will run every 15 minutes between Rabindra Sarobar and Dakshineswar stations, providing regular service until 10:25 PM, when the last train from Dakshineswar will depart. This will help manage the heavy crowd expected during the late evening hours. These special trains are exclusively available for passengers using smart cards or tokens. Ticket counters will remain closed on this day to streamline the boarding process and reduce delays at the stations.
Additionally, Kolkata Metro will continue its night service on the same day between Rabindra Sarobar and Dum Dum stations. The last train of the night service is scheduled to leave at 10:40 PM. These services are intended to assist passengers who will be traveling later into the night and early morning. As with the special trains, passengers will need to use smart cards or tokens to board, as ticket counters will not be available.
The metro authorities have emphasized the importance of using smart cards or tokens on December 31st, as it will allow faster access to the trains. Recharge machines for smart cards will be available at stations, enabling passengers to top up their cards if necessary before boarding the special services. The move aims to streamline operations and manage the large crowds expected during the year-end festivities.
The special train services are part of Kolkata Metro's broader efforts to facilitate smooth travel and prevent overcrowding. The metro system expects a significant rise in passenger numbers due to the New Year celebrations, and the additional trains are designed to cater to this increased demand. Passengers will be able to travel across key stations on the North-South corridor and ensure safe and timely returns after the festivities. The measures are designed to improve the overall travel experience during a busy and celebratory period.
