SSKM doctors save Gorakhpur patient’s life with micro-surgery to remove gauze left after surgery

A 64-year-old patient, Makbul Islam, from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, underwent successful micro-surgery at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata after a piece of gauze was left inside his abdomen during a previous surgery. Islam had undergone a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) at a private hospital in Gorakhpur in May. During the procedure, a piece of gauze used for medical purposes was unintentionally left inside his stomach, which led to ongoing complications.

After the surgery, Islam began suffering from persistent stomach pain, vomiting, and a complete loss of appetite. Medical tests confirmed the presence of the gauze in his abdomen. Despite multiple attempts to remove the foreign object through endoscopy, the procedures failed, and Islam’s condition continued to deteriorate. His doctors then recommended a transfer to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata for further intervention.

Upon admission to SSKM Hospital, a team of doctors conducted a detailed examination and determined that micro-surgery was the best course of action. The procedure involved the use of advanced technology to locate and safely remove the gauze. The surgery was successfully carried out, and the gauze was removed without further complications. Following the procedure, Islam’s condition improved, and he began recovering under the care of the hospital’s medical staff.
