Youth attacked with sharp weapons in Murshidabad after hitting sixes in cricket match

A violent attack took place in the Shaspada-Namupada area of Murshidabad’s Kandi police station on Friday morning, when Tashim Sheikh, a 25-year-old Toto driver, was ambushed by a group of youths. The assailants, who were from an opposing team in a local cricket tournament, surrounded Tashim as he was on his way to the market and assaulted him with sharp weapons. Tashim was critically injured and taken to Kandi Sub-Divisional Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries.

The incident stemmed from a dispute during a cricket match earlier in the week. On Wednesday, a winter cricket tournament had been organized in the area, with multiple teams competing. Tashim’s team faced off against another local team, and during the match, Tashim hit three consecutive sixes in a single over. The opposing team responded with verbal taunts and sledging. Although the situation was de-escalated at the time, tensions remained high, particularly from the youth of the opposing team who harbored anger toward Tashim.

On Friday morning, as Tashim was driving his Toto to the market, he was followed by five youths on motorcycles. The attackers stopped him on the road, and an argument ensued. The verbal altercation quickly turned physical, and the attackers began to beat Tashim. One of the attackers was armed with a machete, and another had a firearm. Tashim attempted to escape by running into a nearby house, but the attackers continued to chase and assault him. He eventually collapsed on the road due to the severity of the injuries.

Tashim was discovered by local residents, who immediately came to his aid and transported him to the hospital. His family filed a written complaint with the Kandi police station, and an investigation was initiated. The police are actively searching for the assailants, who have not yet been apprehended. Authorities have confirmed that they are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident and are attempting to identify the suspects involved.

This attack highlights the ongoing issues of violence linked to local sports disputes, where rivalries often escalate into severe confrontations. The police are continuing their search for the attackers and are working to gather additional information from witnesses.
