BSF reinforces Bengal border with extra troops amid rising militancy and infiltration threats

The Border Security Force (BSF) has implemented additional security measures along the India-Bangladesh border, particularly in the districts of Nadia, Malda, and Murshidabad in West Bengal. This action is a response to heightened concerns over infiltration and militancy, following increasing unrest in Bangladesh. The instability has led to a rise in refugees, particularly Hindus, fleeing into India, while multiple militants, recently released from prison, have attempted to cross into India, with some already apprehended by law enforcement agencies.

In an effort to reinforce security, the BSF is recalling 22-24 companies of troops stationed in Manipur. These personnel will be redeployed to strengthen the security presence along the sensitive and vulnerable borders in Bengal. The aim is to prevent infiltration, especially in areas near the Bangladesh border, which are considered high-risk zones due to the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh and the potential for cross-border terrorism.

As part of the enhanced security strategy, the BSF is focusing on improving surveillance and infrastructure. Patrols have been intensified, and additional surveillance equipment, including CCTV cameras and floodlights, have been installed along the border. The BSF is also addressing gaps in fencing and physical barriers in specific areas, where the absence of such security measures could facilitate infiltration. These actions are aimed at preventing any unauthorized crossings and ensuring effective monitoring of border activities, particularly at night.

BSF officials have clarified that there is no confirmed information about widespread infiltration through areas without barriers. However, the force has increased patrolling in these regions to ensure greater vigilance and security. The BSF continues to work in close coordination with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), ensuring smooth communication and collaboration between both forces. This cooperation is vital to prevent illegal movements across the border and enhance overall security.

The heightened security measures follow several arrests of individuals with links to militant groups in West Bengal and Assam. These individuals were reportedly planning acts of terrorism and attempting to flee to Bangladesh. The BSF has stated that these arrests highlight the ongoing threat of militancy in the region, which is contributing to the current security challenges. The increased deployment of BSF troops and strengthened security infrastructure are part of ongoing efforts to safeguard India’s borders and prevent further cross-border terrorism or militant infiltration.
