Man dies, 6 family members hospitalized in Birbhum after eating turtle meat
Kolkata is significantly enhancing its security measures in anticipation of the Christmas celebrations, with more than 1,000 police officers currently deployed across the city. This figure will rise to over 2,000 officers on December 25th to ensure safety during the festivities. The police presence will cover major public areas, churches, and crowded zones where large gatherings are expected.
The deployment plan includes not only regular police officers but also 8 officers of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) rank who will be responsible for overseeing security arrangements. To ensure comprehensive coverage, 11 watch towers will be set up across the city, enhancing surveillance in key locations. In addition, 3 Quick Reaction Teams (QRT) will be on standby to handle any emergencies swiftly. The police will also establish 40 assistance booths throughout the city to provide immediate support when necessary.
With a focus on public safety, particularly women’s security, the Kolkata Police will increase the number of female officers on duty. Plainclothes officers will also be strategically placed in crowded locations such as Markui Street to blend with the crowd and ensure security. Special measures are being taken to prevent accidents and criminal activity, including intensified drunk-driving checks at naka points throughout the city, similar to those seen during the Durga Puja season. The aim is to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure smooth celebrations.
In addition to ground measures, surveillance efforts will be heightened with an expanded network of CCTV cameras installed in key areas. Police personnel will monitor public spaces, and the city’s security will be overseen by 30 Assistant Commissioners, 27 Inspectors, and 250 Sub-Inspectors. The city will also maintain a heightened level of vigilance in busy areas to ensure prompt responses to any potential threats or disturbances during the Christmas and New Year period.
