Kolkata tightens security after militant arrests ahead of year-end celebrations

Kolkata Police has ramped up security measures following the arrest of several individuals allegedly linked to militant groups. Among those detained is Javed, a Kashmiri militant arrested from Canning, a town located on the outskirts of Kolkata. The arrests are part of ongoing operations targeting individuals connected to militant organizations in Bangladesh. The developments have raised concerns about potential threats to the region, leading authorities to intensify their vigilance ahead of the New Year celebrations.

Key areas, including Park Street, Allen Park, Bowbazar, and Marquis Street, have been identified as high-risk zones. The Kolkata Police has significantly increased surveillance in these areas, particularly focusing on Marquis Street due to its concentration of hotels and bars. Intelligence reports have prompted additional security measures, with CCTV coverage expanded across Park Street and other sensitive locations. Watchtowers have been set up to provide enhanced monitoring of the area, while the police have also increased their presence in popular gathering spots such as Millennium Park, Victoria Memorial, and the Maidan.

The city’s security plan includes dividing Park Street into multiple zones, each overseen by a Deputy Commissioner (DC). The zones are supported by Assistant Commissioners and Inspectors, who will ensure effective coordination and supervision during the busy period. A central control room will be used to monitor the entire operation, with senior police officers managing the situation in real time. The city’s traffic police have also been instructed to conduct nikka (checkpoint) searches to monitor the movement of individuals and vehicles in high-traffic areas.

The security boost follows recent arms recoveries in the city, including from Muchipara and AJC Bose Road, which have raised the stakes for law enforcement. In addition to the deployment of plainclothes officers in sensitive areas, the Kolkata Police has also issued orders to local police stations and traffic units to perform regular searches. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activity to ensure the safety and security of all residents and visitors during the year-end celebrations.
