Bangladeshi national arrested with fake Indian passport and multiple fake IDs at Hili border

A 23-year-old Bangladeshi national, Ratul Basak, was arrested on Sunday evening at the Hili international land port in South Dinajpur district, while attempting to cross into Bangladesh. Basak, a resident of Bogura, Bangladesh, was found in possession of a counterfeit Indian passport, along with forged Indian identification documents, including an Aadhaar card, PAN card, and voter ID card.

Basak had applied for the Indian passport earlier this year from an address in the Durgaipur area of Gangarampur in South Dinajpur district. He reportedly used fraudulent documents to apply for the passport. Authorities are investigating the method by which Basak entered India and how he managed to obtain the fake documents. The police are also examining whether he had any assistance from other individuals or networks involved in document forgery.

Sources from the Hili Immigration Checkpoint confirmed that Basak was carrying a Bangladeshi passport and multiple forged Indian documents. These included the fake Aadhaar card, PAN card, and voter ID card, which were used to obtain the counterfeit Indian passport. The passport had been issued based on the fraudulent documents, allowing Basak to travel under a fabricated identity. A Lookout Notice had been issued for Basak before his arrest, which alerted border officials to his possible attempt to leave India.

After his arrest, Basak was transferred to the Hili police station for further questioning. On Monday, he was produced in the Balurghat district court, where the court ordered four days of police custody for further investigation. The authorities are working to identify the sources from which Basak obtained the fake documents and to determine whether there is a larger network operating in the creation of fake identities for illegal activities.

The police are also investigating whether Basak had been residing in India illegally or had overstayed his visa. They are focusing on his movement in India and his activities since his arrival. Further investigation is underway to uncover any connections to larger cross-border document-forging syndicates. No additional details about his network or other individuals involved have been disclosed at this time.
