Sagar Mela's vessel services have been significantly disrupted due to the continuous silt accumulation in the Mugginga River, resulting in service suspensions for 5 to 6 hours during low tide. The river's shallow areas and sediment buildup have made navigation challenging, particularly during low tide, when the water level is at its lowest. This has led to long delays and large numbers of pilgrims being stranded at key ghats, including Kachidwip Lot No. 8 and Sagar’s Kachubedia.
To address the issue, authorities have introduced 8 large barges in addition to the regular vessels. Each barge is designed to carry over 2,500 passengers, significantly increasing transport capacity and reducing congestion at the ghats. These barges will operate alongside the existing fleet of vessels, ensuring a smoother flow of pilgrims during the fair. The barges will primarily transport passengers during the busy hours when vessel services are halted due to low tide.
The barges will be equipped with advanced technologies to enhance operational efficiency and safety. Ishore technology will be used for real-time tracking of the barges’ locations and water depth monitoring. The vessels and barges will also have communication systems, including satellite phones, for maintaining constant contact with the control room, ensuring coordinated movements. Additionally, to aid navigation in foggy conditions, foreign-style lighting systems, typically used at airports, will be installed along the river to improve visibility and ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
