Babul Supriyo and Justice Ganguly's heated exchange on 2nd Hooghly bridge
Promothesh Ghosal, a 38-year-old private tutor from Dhaniakhali, was sentenced to death by the Chunchura court for the brutal murder of his father, mother, and sister. The incident occurred on November 8, 2021, in the Pal Para area of Daskhora village. Ghosal was found guilty of slitting the throats and wrist veins of his father, Ashim Ghosal (68), mother, Subhra Ghosal (60), and sister, Pallabi Chattopadhyay (38).
Following the murders, Ghosal attempted suicide by cutting his own wrist. He was discovered critically injured and rushed to Chunchura Imam Bada Hospital for medical treatment. After recovering, he was arrested by the Dhaniakhali police. Pallabi’s husband, Partha Chattopadhyay, filed a murder complaint, triggering a police investigation into the triple homicide.
The investigation revealed that Ghosal had killed his family members in a premeditated attack. During the trial, 14 witnesses testified against him. The prosecution, led by government lawyer Shankar Gangopadhyay, presented evidence of the brutal killings. Ghosal remained in custody throughout the trial. Despite a plea for release during the sentencing, his request was rejected, and the court imposed the death penalty, citing the extreme brutality of the crime.
The Dhaniakhali police completed the investigation swiftly, and the charge sheet was filed on time. Ghosal’s conviction for the triple murder was based on the gathered evidence, including testimonies from witnesses and the findings of the investigation. The Chunchura court's decision to sentence Ghosal to death marks a significant conclusion to the case, which shocked the local community due to its violence and the family ties involved.
