Kolkata is experiencing a significant surge in visitors at its major tourist attractions as the holiday season begins. Park Street, which is traditionally known for its Christmas celebrations, has been extensively decorated with festive lights, attracting large crowds. The area, along with several churches across the city, has also started illuminating its buildings ahead of Christmas, marking the start of the holiday season. The crowd buildup this year has begun earlier than usual, with more people visiting these spots before December 25th.
In addition to Park Street, key locations such as Esplanade, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Victoria Memorial are seeing increased footfall as people gather to celebrate the season. The rise in visitors is not restricted to central Kolkata. New Town's Eco Park, known for its green spaces and picnic areas, is seeing a major influx of visitors this December. Eco Park recorded a total of 39,000 ticket bookings on December 22, with 34,540 offline bookings and 5,340 online bookings.
To manage the large number of visitors and the resulting traffic congestion, the Kolkata Traffic Police has implemented measures to regulate vehicle movement around Park Street. As the crowds grow in anticipation of the holiday celebrations, authorities are focusing on ensuring smooth traffic flow and safety for pedestrians. With the holiday season in full swing, visitor numbers at popular attractions like Eco Park and other city landmarks are expected to rise further as Christmas and New Year approach.
