A devastating fire in Laxmipura village, Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, claimed the lives of a 65-year-old man and his two minor granddaughters on Saturday night. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 pm, has left the community in mourning.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by an "angithi" (stove) that was lit inside the hut to combat the cold weather, according to Bairad police station in-charge Vikas Yadav. The flames quickly engulfed the hut, giving its occupants little time to escape.
Hajari Banjara, 65, and his 10-year-old granddaughter Sandhya perished at the scene. Anushka, the younger granddaughter aged 5, suffered severe burns and succumbed to her injuries while being rushed to the hospital.
Upon receiving reports of the fire, police and fire department personnel arrived at the scene and managed to control the blaze. Despite their efforts, the damage had already been done, leaving the family shattered.
The local administration has stepped in to provide assistance to the grieving family. Bairad tehsildar Dragpal Singh Vaish announced financial aid of ₹4 lakh for each of the deceased and additional support for the last rites. The gesture aims to help the family cope with their loss during this tragic time.
This incident underscores the dangers of using traditional heating methods like angithis, especially in rural areas during winter. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution while using open flames to avoid similar tragedies.
