Babul Supriyo and Justice Ganguly's heated exchange on 2nd Hooghly bridge
Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur has announced a series of significant infrastructure projects aimed at transforming Petrapole, the largest land port on the India-Bangladesh border, into a key transportation hub. These developments include plans for a new railway station linking Petrapole to Bangaon and a proposed extension of the Kolkata Metro to Petrapole, which will enhance both trade and passenger connectivity.
Petrapole plays a vital role in India-Bangladesh trade, handling nearly 50% of the cross-border trade between the two nations. The port also serves as a key transit point for Bangladeshi nationals traveling to Kolkata for medical treatment and business. The new infrastructure is expected to streamline trade operations and make travel more efficient for those crossing the border.
“We aim to build a railway station from Petrapole to Bangaon and extend the Kolkata Metro to Petrapole,” Shantanu Thakur said. He noted that while discussions with the Railway Ministry are ongoing, land acquisition has been a challenge, but the government is optimistic that the issue will be resolved.
In addition to the new transportation links, a ₹30 crore Border Security Force (BSF) complex has been inaugurated at Petrapole. This facility includes four modern buildings designed to improve living and operational conditions for BSF personnel stationed at the land port. The complex is part of a broader effort to enhance security at the India-Bangladesh border.
The planned railway station will connect Petrapole to Bangaon, improving access to the national rail network and reducing travel time. Extending the Kolkata Metro to Petrapole will offer a faster, more convenient transport option for passengers traveling between Kolkata and the border region.
Petrapole’s strategic significance extends beyond trade, as it is also a critical point for managing cross-border movement. The proposed projects are expected to boost regional infrastructure, improve security, and facilitate smoother economic exchanges between India and Bangladesh.
These developments come at a time when India is working to strengthen its borders while also improving connectivity with neighboring countries. If completed, these projects will help Petrapole become a more efficient and modern border hub, fostering stronger economic and diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh.
