Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder case of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, underwent an extensive round of questioning at Sealdah Court on Friday. The court session lasted more than six hours, with Roy being asked over 100 questions by the judge. The questions focused on the details of the charges against him, the testimonies of witnesses, and other critical pieces of evidence related to the case. The interrogation was part of the ongoing judicial process to determine his role in the tragic events.
Roy, who was brought to court around 11 AM, appeared nervous as he entered the courtroom. The questioning session began immediately after his arrival and continued until 2 PM. After a 30-minute lunch break, the interrogation resumed at 2:30 PM and continued until 5 PM. Sources indicated that the judge thoroughly examined various aspects of the case, probing inconsistencies in Roy’s statements and seeking clarification on several points, including the timeline of events and the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death.
The trial, which began on November 11, has now reached its final stages. The Supreme Court had indicated on December 10 that the trial is expected to conclude within a month. So far, a total of 50 witnesses have testified in the case, including the victim's colleagues, forensic experts, and medical professionals. These witnesses have provided crucial evidence, with testimonies covering the victim’s last moments, as well as forensic analysis of the physical evidence collected at the crime scene.
Among the key testimonies were those from the victim’s four colleagues, who had been with her on the evening of the incident. These colleagues provided detailed accounts of their interactions with the victim on the night of August 8, when she was last seen alive. Additionally, forensic experts presented findings from the post-mortem examination, which confirmed the cause of death and provided additional context to the physical evidence found at the scene. These testimonies, along with other pieces of evidence, have shaped the ongoing investigation and the trial.
In a related development, the victim’s family has filed a petition in the Kolkata High Court, challenging the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) handling of the case. The family expressed concerns over the CBI’s delay in filing a charge sheet within the prescribed 90-day period. This delay led to the granting of bail to two key suspects: Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the former OC of Tala Police Station. In response, the High Court directed the CBI to clarify its position regarding the delay and the handling of the case.
