A youth from Iqbalpur in Chandrakona-1 Block, West Medinipur, has been arrested for allegedly blackmailing a minor by using intimate photos of her. Soumen Ghosh, the accused, reportedly formed a romantic relationship with the victim and during this time, took private photos of her without her knowledge. The situation took a darker turn when Ghosh began to extort money from the minor, threatening to release the photos unless his demands were met.
According to police reports, Ghosh repeatedly contacted the minor and pressured her to pay him money, stating that if she refused, he would make the photos public. The victim, fearing the consequences of having her private images exposed, gave in to his demands multiple times. The incidents of extortion continued until the minor’s family discovered the ongoing blackmail and decided to take action.
On Thursday evening, Ghosh visited the minor’s house once again to demand money. This time, the minor's family, along with local residents who had been alerted to the situation, caught Ghosh in the act. The locals detained him and forced him to apologize before handing him over to the police. A formal written complaint was filed at the Chandrakona police station by the minor and her family, leading to Ghosh’s immediate arrest.
Soumen Ghosh is currently in police custody, and the authorities are thoroughly investigating the case. Police are examining whether Ghosh has engaged in similar blackmailing activities with other minors. Investigators are also looking into the extent of the photos being circulated and the possibility of additional victims. The authorities have assured the public that they will take strict legal action and ensure the protection of the victim’s rights.
