Born on January 1, 1935, in Chautala village in Sirsa district, Haryana, Om Prakash Chautala was the son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, a prominent leader who served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India. Chautala entered politics in the 1960s and became an influential leader within the INLD. He served as the Chief Minister of Haryana for four terms—December 1989 to 1990, 1991 to 1996, 1996 to 1999, and 1999 to 2005. He was known for his focus on agriculture, rural development, and promoting the rights of farmers in Haryana, establishing himself as a strong regional leader.
In 2022, Chautala was convicted in a case related to disproportionate assets. He was sentenced to a four-year prison term by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court for acquiring assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. At the time of his conviction, he became the oldest prisoner in Tihar Jail at the age of 87. He was granted bail and released in 2020 after serving part of his sentence. Despite the legal challenges, Chautala continued to maintain influence within his party and in Haryana's politics.
Chautala's death has left a significant impact on Haryana’s political scene. Politicians from various parties have expressed their condolences, acknowledging his long-standing contributions to the state. His family and supporters are preparing for his final rites. Chautala's legacy will be remembered for his leadership of the INLD and his role in shaping the political trajectory of Haryana over several decades.
