The Indian men’s hockey team has reached the fifth spot in the latest world rankings issued by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). This remarkable achievement comes after a historic performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where they secured a bronze medal, and a successful title defense at the Asian Champions Trophy earlier this year.
The Indian team’s stellar campaign at the Paris Olympics was marked by a nail-biting 2-1 victory against Spain in the bronze medal match. Despite trailing 0-1 after Marc Miralles’ opening goal, captain Harmanpreet Singh inspired a comeback with two crucial goals, ensuring India’s podium finish. This victory also extended India’s Olympic record against Spain to eight wins in 11 matches.
India’s journey in 2024 also saw them clinch their fifth Asian Champions Trophy title in a tense 1-0 victory against hosts China in September. Jugraj Singh’s late goal in the final showcased India’s grit and determination to succeed on the biggest stages.
Globally, the Netherlands maintained its dominance, topping the rankings with 3,267 points after a fantastic year that included victories in the FIH Men’s World Cup, EuroHockey Championship, and the Pro League. England (3,139 points), Belgium (3,124 points), and Germany (3,066 points) secured the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.
The Indian women’s hockey team also made strides, securing the ninth position in the global rankings. The Netherlands led the women’s category as well, backed by their Olympic gold, EuroHockey Championship win, and another Pro League title.
India’s consistent performances across tournaments in 2024 reflect the team’s upward momentum. With improved rankings and back-to-back Olympic medals, Indian hockey is experiencing a resurgence, promising brighter prospects in upcoming tournaments.
