Arvind Kejriwal, the chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has announced the launch of the ‘Sanjeevani Yojana,’ a free healthcare scheme for senior citizens aged 60 and above in Delhi. The scheme will offer free medical treatment in both government and private hospitals across the city, with no upper limit on the cost of treatment. The initiative is set to be rolled out after the Delhi Assembly elections in 2025, contingent on AAP’s victory.
Registration for the scheme will begin shortly, with AAP workers scheduled to visit the homes of eligible citizens to facilitate the registration process and issue healthcare cards. The card will allow seniors to access free medical services under the scheme once it is implemented. Kejriwal emphasized that the scheme will cover all healthcare expenses, including consultations, treatments, surgeries, and hospital stays.
The Sanjeevani Yojana is part of AAP’s larger set of welfare measures aimed at improving the quality of life for Delhi residents. This includes the previously announced Mahila Samman Yojana, under which ₹1,000 per month will be given to eligible women in Delhi. This amount will be increased to ₹2,100 per month if AAP wins the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
The term of the current Delhi Assembly is set to expire on February 23, 2025, and the Election Commission of India is expected to announce the dates for the elections soon. Preparatory meetings are already in progress as the election period approaches. AAP has officially announced its list of candidates for all 70 constituencies in Delhi. Kejriwal will contest from the New Delhi constituency, while Atishi will run from the Kalkaji seat.
The Sanjeevani Yojana follows AAP’s ongoing efforts to expand healthcare access in the city. The party’s previous initiatives, such as the Mohalla Clinics, have aimed to provide accessible healthcare to all residents, and this scheme is seen as an extension of that vision. The new initiative reflects AAP’s commitment to the welfare of senior citizens, recognizing their contributions to society.
In the 2015 and 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, AAP secured overwhelming victories, winning 67 and 63 seats in the 70-member legislature, respectively. With the upcoming elections, AAP seeks to secure a third consecutive term in office.
