Manmohan Singh’s ashes immersed in Yamuna River; Congress a no show
Dipankar Das was arrested from his residence at 149/6A Becharam Chatterjee Road, Parnasree, Kolkata, in connection with an ongoing investigation into a fake passport racket. The arrest follows information gathered from the earlier apprehension of Samaresh Biswas and Deepak Mondal, both accused of issuing fraudulent Indian passports to Bangladeshi nationals.
A raid at Das’s residence resulted in the recovery of multiple items linked to the operation. Police seized computers, forged seals of banks such as SBI, Bank of India, and Indian Bank, photocopies of 36 Indian passports, and fake Schengen and UK visas. These materials are suspected to have been used in producing fake identity documents, which were then utilized to secure Indian passports. All seized materials have been taken for forensic analysis to aid the investigation.
The racket was uncovered earlier this month with the arrests of Samaresh Biswas, a temporary staffer at the postal department, and Deepak Mondal. Biswas is alleged to have used his position to access official document templates, which were forged to create identity proofs. The police claim that 37 fake passports have been issued so far by this network, primarily targeting Bangladeshi nationals seeking fraudulent documentation.
Authorities are now investigating the broader scope of the operation and are working to identify additional individuals involved. Further raids and arrests are anticipated as police trace connections to other regions and potential links to organized criminal networks.
