Junior doctors gherao CGO complex after bail in RG Kar case

Junior doctors in Kolkata staged a protest today, marching from Karunamoyee to CGO Complex, following the grant of bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, and the former Officer in Charge (OIC) of Tala police station. Both were granted bail after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to submit a charge sheet within the 90-day period mandated by law. The bail decision has sparked widespread protests, particularly in the medical community, after 132 days of delay in the investigation of the case involving Tilottama.

The case, which has drawn attention due to allegations of corruption against Ghosh and the former OIC, has seen significant public unrest. Junior doctor Debashish Halder emphasized that the protest aimed to highlight the frustration of the public and to call for accountability from the judicial system. Halder stated that the doctors were protesting to show that common people are on the streets demanding justice. The protestors are also calling for a swift investigation and timely justice in the case, which they argue has been delayed without explanation.

In addition to the protest at CGO Complex, another demonstration took place on Rani Rashmoni Avenue, where doctors attempted to burn effigies as part of their protest. The demonstration was disrupted when police intervened, preventing the effigies from being set on fire. Protestors accused the police of obstructing their protest, and tensions escalated when fire department personnel poured water on the effigies. This intervention led to a heated exchange between the protestors, police, and fire officials.

The protests have become a focal point for those demanding accountability in the case and raising concerns about corruption within both the medical and police sectors. Citizens and medical professionals alike have expressed anger at the perceived delay in justice for Tilottama, with many calling for a faster resolution to the case and a review of the judicial and investigative processes. The situation remains tense, with ongoing protests expected until a resolution is reached.
