Babul Supriyo and Justice Ganguly's heated exchange on 2nd Hooghly bridge
Protests have erupted across Kolkata, triggered by the ongoing delays in the investigation of the Abhaya murder-rape case. The case, which was transferred to the CBI over three months ago, has yet to see the filing of a charge sheet. The delay has sparked widespread public dissatisfaction, with citizens, political leaders, and professional organizations demanding urgent action from the authorities to bring justice for the victim.
The protests have gained momentum following the court's decision to grant bail to two individuals involved in the case: Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station. This has further fueled public anger, particularly from opposition parties, including the Left and Congress. Protests have been organized in various parts of Kolkata, with demonstrators gathering in front of key locations, including Nizam Palace. In some areas, the protests have turned violent, with clashes reported between police and Congress supporters.
In addition to political parties, professional organizations have also joined the protests. Medical professionals and doctors’ organizations gathered at Dharmatala to demand a swift resolution to the case, expressing concern over the handling of the investigation. The SFI, the student wing of the CPM, held a protest march at College Street, with demonstrators raising slogans against the CBI’s delayed actions. Protestors displayed banners with messages calling for justice, demanding that the investigation proceed without further delay.
The continued protests have put increased pressure on the CBI, which has faced questions regarding its slow pace in investigating the case. The public is demanding that the agency provide an explanation for the failure to file a charge sheet within the expected time frame. The state government has also come under scrutiny, with critics questioning its role in the prolonged legal proceedings. As the protests intensify, calls for transparency and accountability in the investigation have grown louder, with many calling for a swift judicial process.
