Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging immediate action to address the growing law and order challenges in Delhi. In the letter, Kejriwal highlighted a range of concerning statistics, including Delhi’s position as the leading city for crimes against women among 19 major metro cities in India. He also pointed out that the city ranks first in murder cases and noted that extortion gangs are increasingly active in multiple areas.
Kejriwal raised alarms about the frequent bomb threats targeting schools, malls, and airports, which have created widespread fear among residents. He specifically mentioned the impact on parents and children, particularly when schools are evacuated due to bomb threats, adding to the general sense of insecurity. Kejriwal further highlighted a significant rise in drug-related crimes, which have surged by 350%, contributing to a further decline in public safety and security.
In addition to bomb threats and drug-related crimes, Kejriwal expressed concern about the rise in violent crimes, including daylight shootings, kidnappings, and murders, which have occurred in recent months. He pointed out that these crimes, often committed in broad daylight, reflect the growing boldness of criminals in the city, who appear to operate without fear of law enforcement. Kejriwal claimed that this trend contributes to Delhi being viewed as both the "crime capital" and "rape capital."
The former Chief Minister emphasized that Delhi Police, which operates under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, is responsible for maintaining law and order in the capital. Despite this, he criticized the lack of effective action in curbing the rising crime rate and called for stronger measures to improve public safety. Kejriwal’s letter also mentioned the lack of visible deterrence against criminal activities and urged Amit Shah to address the issue promptly.
Kejriwal requested a meeting with Amit Shah to discuss the worsening situation and explore possible solutions. He specifically called for a coordinated effort to tackle extortion gangs, enhance law enforcement response times, and address the rising levels of violent crime. Kejriwal stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of Delhi’s residents and urged the central government to take more effective action to control the increasing crime rate.
The concerns raised by Kejriwal come in the wake of multiple bomb threats to schools and public institutions, which have been a significant source of anxiety for Delhi's residents. Recently, the Delhi High Court directed the Delhi government and Delhi Police to formulate a detailed action plan and standard operating procedures for dealing with bomb threats and related emergencies. The court has set an eight-week deadline for the implementation of these measures, which further underscores the urgency of addressing the security situation in the city.
