Mayor Firhad Hakim inspected a dilapidated and hazardous building in Kalighat’s Ward 73, which is part of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. The structure has been flagged as unsafe, with 13 families currently residing in it. Local Councillor Kajari Banerjee joined the Mayor during the visit to assess the condition of the building and address residents' concerns.
Mayor Hakim announced that the building would be demolished due to its unsafe condition and rebuilt under the Banglar Bari scheme, a state government program that provides affordable housing for low-income families. He assured the residents that they would be issued possession certificates, ensuring their legal rights to the newly constructed homes.
The demolition and reconstruction will be carried out under the supervision of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Officials have been instructed to expedite the process while ensuring the safety of the current tenants during the transition. Arrangements will also be made to temporarily relocate the affected families if necessary.
This building, located on Madan Pal Lane, has been a concern for years due to its deteriorating state. The residents expressed relief over the announcement, as the new housing will offer improved living conditions. The timeline for the demolition and construction is expected to be finalized soon, with regular updates provided to the tenants.
