Union Cabinet approves 'One Nation, One Election' Bill: Reports
A significant tragedy was averted in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning after police detected and successfully defused an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. The swift action by authorities ensured no loss of life or property in the region.
During a routine inspection, the police discovered a suspicious object in the Palhallan area of the highway. Acting promptly, they cordoned off the area and called in a bomb disposal squad. Upon examination, the object was confirmed to be an IED.
Traffic on the busy highway was suspended immediately to ensure public safety while the bomb squad worked to neutralize the threat. Within a few hours, the device was destroyed, and normalcy was restored on the highway.
The incident site lies approximately 30 to 40 kilometers away from Gulmarg, a popular tourist destination that sees a significant influx of visitors during the winter season. The timely intervention of law enforcement averted potential harm to civilians and tourists.
Authorities have not yet identified who planted the device. Security agencies suspect the involvement of terror groups, as such devices are frequently used to target security convoys or VIP movements in Jammu and Kashmir.
This incident comes shortly after three houses were attached in Shopian and Baramulla under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with separate terror-related cases. The ongoing security measures underscore the persistent threat in the region.
