A man accused of stealing gold worth ₹50 lakh was arrested by the police from a cinema hall in Krishnanagar, Nadia, while watching Pushpa 2. The accused, Dilip Modak, had stolen 552 grams of gold in October from a jeweler in Bowbazar, Kolkata. The jeweler had entrusted Modak with the gold for jewelry crafting, but he failed to return it, prompting the jeweler to file a police complaint.
The police launched an investigation after the complaint, which included several raids to locate Modak. Despite efforts, the suspect managed to evade arrest. During the investigation, police learned that Modak had a regular habit of watching films and would often visit cinemas. This led the authorities to focus on surveilling various movie halls in Kolkata and Nadia.
On Saturday evening, while Modak was watching Pushpa 2 at a cinema hall in Krishnanagar, plainclothes officers who had been monitoring the theater arrested him. The police recovered 441 grams of gold and ₹50,000 in cash from his possession at the time of his arrest. Modak admitted to stealing the gold, but he claimed that he had already sold 81 grams of the stolen gold. Police are working on tracing the remaining gold and investigating how it was sold.
Following his arrest, the police are investigating whether Modak was part of a larger criminal network involved in gold theft. Authorities are probing the possibility that he may have sold the remaining 81 grams of gold through illegal means, though Modak has not disclosed the details of the transaction. The recovered gold will be returned to the jeweler once all legal formalities are completed.
In addition to the ongoing investigation into the stolen gold, police are looking into whether Modak is connected to any larger criminal syndicates involved in similar thefts. Recently, several individuals were arrested in Bowbazar for impersonating CBI officers to steal gold. Authorities are examining whether Modak was part of this group or if he was involved with any other organized crime syndicates engaged in gold theft.
The case is still under investigation, with the police focused on recovering the remaining stolen gold and determining Modak’s full involvement in the criminal network. As the probe continues, further arrests could be made, and the investigation will attempt to uncover the complete scope of Modak's activities. The police are also analyzing the flow of stolen gold in illegal markets to prevent further thefts.
